Basic Operating Regulations of the Interdepartmental Master Program: “MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY & CHEMICAL BIOLOGY”

MASTER STUDIES

  1. The Interdepartmental Master Program in Medicinal Chemistry: “Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology” of the departments of Chemistry and Pharmacy leads to the acquisition of a Master Diploma (MD). The time duration is three (3) teaching semesters (90 ECTS).

SELECTION OF GRADUATE STUDENTS

  1. In the Master Program, graduates of the departments of Chemistry, Pharmacy, Medicine, Biology, Science of Materials, Chemical Engineers and other departments related with the program’s concept (Medicinal Chemistry & Chemical Biology) as well as graduates of the department of Chemical Applications of the Technological School or related departments, from Greek or Foreign Universities, are accepted. Graduates from abroad should definitely have recognition of their qualifications from the Greek authorities (DOATAP). Undergraduate students are allowed to submit an application in condition that when selected in the Master Program they will deposit a certified copy of their degree or recognition of their qualification at the Secretariat of the department.
  2. The selection of the Graduate Students (GS) takes place after decision of the Interdepartmental Committee (IC), after a suggestion of the Selection Committee defined by the IC, which takes into account data resulting from the submitted documents and the candidate’s interviews. The time and place of the candidates’ interview is defined by the IC and announced by the Secretariat of the Chemistry department that has the administrative support.
  3. Candidate selection criteria: the selection takes place after taking into account the following data: a) the bachelor degree grade; b) the grades scored in modules related to the Master Program concept; c) the performance in their bachelor diploma thesis if found necessary from the graduate’s department for the acquisition of an undergraduate qualification and the relevance with this Master Program; d) possible research activity; e) participation in conferences; f) the candidate’s presence during the interview; g) knowledge of foreign languages (preferably English) as well as computer skills; h) the submission of at least two (2) recommendation letters from professors of the department of graduation; i) candidate’s curriculum vitae.

  • Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) of Central Lancashire University
  1. Certificate in Proficient Communication of Edexcel International London Examinations
  2. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) of University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) – The British Council – IDP Education Australia IELTS Australia
  3. National Certificate in English, Level C2

The very good knowledge of the English Language (Level B2) is proved by the following certificates:

  1. Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) of Cambridge University

  1. National Certificate In English (Level B2)

  1. d) Interview
  2. e) Optional, previous research experience in the field as indicated by the participation of the applicant in related conferences with an oral or a poster presentation.
  3. The highest marks in Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry and General Biology, in the undergraduate level are taken into account for the final acceptance ranking of the applicants.

Relation between Greek grading scale and ECTS Grade is shown below:

Greek grading scale: 1 to 10. Minimum passing grade: 5.

Grades £3 correspond to ECTS grade F.

Grade 4 corresponds to ECTS grade FX.

For the passing grades the following correspondence normally holds:

5 « E, 6 « D, 7 « C, 8 « B and ³9 « A

SUPERVISOR DEFINITION-EXAMINATION COMMITTEE

  1. The IC defines a scientific supervisor for each GS. The supervisor is responsible for monitoring and observing the GS progress. For the examination of the Master Diploma, a three member committee is defined by the IC, one of which is the supervisor. The members of the committee can have the same or relative scientific specialty with the program concept (Medicinal Chemistry & Chemical Biology).

MODULES

  1. The IC decides for the graduate level module acknowledgement which the GS has taken successfully in a recognized MSP of a different department of the same or other University or research institute.
  2. The three member committee can demand from the GS the successful examination of undergraduate modules of familiar departments, as well as his obligations to the Master Program “Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology” in which he will be enrolled. The grade scored in those modules will not be taken into account in the final grade of the MD as well as in the calculation of the ranking for scholarships.
  3. The offered courses are: a) Discovery, Design and Evaluation of Drugs (Compulsory; 5ECTS); b) Biomacromolecular and Combinational Chemistry (Semi Optional; 5ECTS); c) The Macromolecules as Targets for Treatment Approaches (Semi Optional; 5ECTS); d) Genetic and Molecular Basic of Diseases-Molecular Medicine (Semi Optional; 5ECTS); e) Organic Chemistry of Biological Processes (Semi Optional; 5ECTS); f) Structural and Combinatorial Medicinal Chemistry (Semi Optional; 5ECTS); g) Organic Synthesis of Drugs (Semi Optional; 5ECTS); h) Methods for Analysis of Bioactive Molecules (Semi Optional; 5ECTS); i) Research Methodology (Compulsory; 5ECTS); k) Chemical Biology (Compulsory; 5ECTS); l) Basic and Translational Immunology (Semi Optional; 5ECTS); m) Pharmacology (Mechanisms – Targets for Pharmacological Intervention) (Semi Optional; 5ECTS); n) Master Diploma Thesis-Ι (Inception) (Compulsory; 15ECTS); o) Master Diploma Thesis-ΙΙ (continuation, completion, writing and presentation) (Compulsory; 15ECTS).
  4. The exam time period is defined by decision of the IC in February-March for the first semester the June-July for the second semester and lasts one week for each.
  5. The students have the right, in case of failing in exams in February-March and June-July, to be re-examined in September, during the iterative exam period.
  6. The GS are obliged to attend seminars that are defined by the IC, in subjects related to the field of Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology.

RATING

  1. The MD is completed when the research thesis is presented in public and the grade of research thesis is submitted to the secretary of the department of Chemistry in the University of Patras Chemistry by the three member committee. The public presentation takes place is the presence of the three member committee as defined from the University’s internal regulation.
  2. The MD grade is calculated from the total of credits and research units (30).

FUNDING

The total amount of money credited to the department for the program function either in the form of Regular Budget, or in the form of scholarships, donations etc will be divided to the  members of the program by decision of the IC, for the maintenance of the infrastructure.

OTHER

  1. The IC consists of five (5) members. Three (3) members from the department of Chemistry, two (3) from the department of Medicine and two (2) representatives GS of the Master Program.
  2. The Director is defined after election, for a two year service with a renewal possibility and can do his duties with partial exemption from his teaching obligations. The Director is either a Professor or an Associate Professor and should belong in the same or related field with the Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology concept. The Director’s election will take place by the end of the former Director’s two year service. The candidates submit their candidacy on the day the IC elects Director.
